Why South Indians use their hands to eat the food

 

It is not only the Indians who eat with their hands but a lot many other people too. Food items like pizza pretzels, chips hamburgers are mostly eaten with hand in America. In Europe cheese olives and bread, in China dim sum,  is consumed using hand.Pavlov’s  experiment proves that digestive juices start flowing even before touching the food. Then the touch will invokes many other chemical processes which help in the digestion of food

Remember Oprah Winfrey in her famous show ridiculed Indians for eating with their hands. Ignorance should not be the best reason to mock others.  Had she known the benefits of eating with hands she would have used her hands to have food

Ayurveda states that each finger of the hand represents one of the five elements.Little finger represent Earth ring finger water, middle finger represents fire,fore finger represents air and thumb for space.The person who uses his hand stimulates all the elements to collect the food and thus the process of digestion starts even before it is put in to mouth.

 

It is important to induce all the senses while having food.By eating food with your hand, one invokes the touch sensation which in turn sends the message to the brain  thus body will be ready for the food .This infact  increases that digestion and reduces the binge eating of the food.

The amount of Prana or Chi, the good energy is important for food also. Everyone is nostalgic about home cooked food from their mother. The personal touch which involved in the making of the food by your mother will impart a long lasting positive feeling in you knowingly or unknowingly.  it is believed that this positive energy for Prana is responsible for such a feeling. This in turn invokes  a sense of attachment towards your mother through food. Eating of food with hands increases the amount of Prana the good energy in your food.

 

Another reason people are against using their hands to consume food is cleanliness.  it is always best to use your hand with is known to you than an unknown spoon which might be used by many and may not be washed. Moreover you can give your hand a good wash  before having food.

Other reasons like eating with your hands help manage your food portion more effectively than a spoon  or fork. Eating with your hand is a small exercise too. The normal flora Found in the  Palm and index finger  protects from damaging microbes around us.Handling food with hand gives an early message to the brain and this releases digestive enzymes and juices faster. The nerve endings on your finger messages your brain about the temperature texture spiciness and other factors of the food our stomach will be pepped up for the food and helps in digestion.
