Sorakaya Pulusu (Bottle gourd stew/gravy)

Serving size of Sorakaya pulusu

Ingredients required to prepare Sorakaya pulusu

Bottle gourd – 250 gms

Onions – 2

Tamarind – 20 – 30 gms

Water – 2 cups

Red chili powder – 1 – 2 tbsps

Coriander powder – ½ tbsp

Turmeric powder – ¼ tbsp

Mustard – ½ tbsps

Jeera – 1 tbsp

Coriander leaves – 2 sprigs

Curry leaves – 2 leaf lets

Pulses (Popuginjalu) – 1 tbsp

Garlic cloves – 5

Salt – required amount

Oil – 2 – 3 tbsps

Directions to prepare Sorakaya Pulusu :

  1. First we need to select tender bottle gourd and clean it. Then slice it into pieces.

  2. Now , peel the onions, clean in water and slice them.Then soak the tamarind in some water.

  3. After this take a bowl and add 2 – 3 tbsps of oil into it. Let the oil heat.

  4. Once the oil is hot, add mustard, jeera,pulses, curry leaves, garlic cloves, dry red chilies and fry them for a minute

  5. Then add the sliced onions and fry for a minute.

  6. After the onions are fried, add the bottle gourd pieces cook for 5 – 8 minutes.

  7. Squeeze the tamarind juice out of the soaked tamarind and through the pulp.

  8. Add water to the juice and pour into the cooked bottle gourd pieces and onions and boil for 15 minutes.

  9. Then add red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder and salt and mix well.

  10. Add the coriander leaves and cook for five more minutes before turning off.

  11. Now you tasty sorakaya pulusu is ready to be served.

Note : Sorakaya pulusu is consumed in combination with hot rice. Jaggery or Sugar may be added as sweetner.

About : Bottle gourd is one of the very commonly used vegetables in Andhra and often found in the kitchen gardens of almost all the houses. It is rich in water content.
