Ingredients required to prepare Mulakkaya pappu charu :
Split red gram – ½ cup
Water – 4 cups
Drumsticks – 3
Onion – 2
Tomato – 2
Green chilies – 5 – 6
Tamarind – 30 gms
Turmeric powder – ½ tbsp
Coriander powder – 1 tbsp
Red chili powder – 2 – 3 tbsps
Coriander leaves – 1 bunch
Mustard – ½ tbsp
Red chillies – 2 -3
Garlic cloves – 5 – 6
Curry leaves – 2 leaf lets
Oil – 3 – 4 tbsps
Salt – required amount
Directions to prepare Mulakkaya pappu charu :
To prepare tasty and most famous Andhra Mulakkaya pappu charu, we need to take split red gram and clean it water. Then soak them in water for some time.
After the red grams are soaked enough, pour 1 ¼ cups of water in a bowl and add soaked red gram to the water and boil it.
Pressure cooker may be used to boil the red grams. Boil upto 3 – 4 whistles.
Mean while, clean the drumsticks, onions, tomatoes and green chilies, then cut them into pieces.
Now soak the tamarind in water for some time and extract the juice.
After the red grams are boiled, take a big bowl and pour 3 – 4 tbsps of oil into it. Let the oil heat.
Once the oil is hot enough add mustard, jeera, and fry for half a minute.
Now add smashed garlic cloves, curry leaves to the oil and fry for half a minute.
Then add the onion and green chili pieces and fry for two minutes, then follow it with drumstick pieces and fry again for two minutes. Add the tomatoes at the end.
Once all the vegetables are cooked, pour the tamarind juice and 4 cups of water into the bowl, add the cooked split red grams and let everything boil for 15 minutes.
After 15 minutes, add turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder and salt and boil for another 10 minutes.
Add coriander leaves at the end just 2 minutes before switching off the stove.
With this your tasty and famous mulakkaya pappu charu is ready to be served with hot rice.
Note : Mulakkaya pappu charu is consumed in combination with rice. It can also be served with Idly and Dosa.
About : The whole drumstick plant is considered to be having medicinal value. This recipe is more healthy as it consists of tamarind and other vegetables also.
