Mojito : Classic way of preparation

Gems Gems, June 28, 2017

Mojito is a simple cocktail consists of 5 ingredients like, mint, soda water, lime juice, sugar (traditionally cane sugar juice) and white rum. This is believed to be originated in the Cuba and the original Cuban recipe uses spearmint or Yerba Buena, a variety of mint popular in the island. This is one of the favorite summer drink in many places.

The preparation of mojito involves certain procedures. Sugar syrup is mixed with mint leaves. Lime juice is added in to the mixture and gently mashes it with the help of wooden muddler. Ensure that the mint leaves is bruised gently so that the flavor of mint leaves are unlocked through the essential oil present in the leaves. Now for the preparation of cocktail you need to add white rum. Stir it briefly so that everything is mixed properly. Lift the mint leaves to the top for presentation. Top it up with soda water and crushed ice/ ice cubes. Add mint leaves and lime wedges for garnishing.

  • Ice cubes 1 cup
  • White Rum 50 ml
  • Fizzy club Soda ½ cup
Instructions
  1. Cut the lime in 4 wedges.
  2. In a 10 ounce glass such as Collins or high ball glass, add the lime wedge and mint leaves.
  3. Stir it with a meddler.
  4. The lime juice and mint essential oil is released during this process.
  5. Now add 2 more lime wedge and stir it again using a meddler.
  6. Now add sugar and mix again so that the sugar is dissolved.
  7. You can use sugar syrup instead of grain sugar.
  8. Grain sugar gives a different grainy texture than a smooth one with the syrup.
  9. Now top the glass with ice cubes. Add the rum in to it. Now add carbonated water in to the glass to fill it up.
  10. Stir and add more sugar or lime if required or according to your taste.
  11. Garnish with remaining lime wedge and serve.

Avoid white rum and follow all other steps to prepare Mojito mocktail.
