Junnu (Colostrum milk Cheese)

Serving size of Junnu : One small bowl per person

Ingredients required to prepare Junnu :

First day milk after the cow delivered – 1 cup (Colostrum milk)

Normal milk – 1 cup

Jaggery – 300 gm

Cardamom powder – ½ tbsp

Pepper powder – ¼ tbsp

Directions to prepare Junnu :

  1. First we need to take colostrum milk and mix it with normal milk or little bit of water in a bowl.

  2. Then take some amount of jaggery and grate it with the help of a grater or smash the jaggery with a heavy thing.

  3. Now add the grated or smashed jaggery to the milk and stir until the jaggery is dissolved.

  4. Add pepper powder and cardamom powder to the jaggery mixed milk and stir again.

  5. Cardamom powder may be bought readymade or it can be homemade by smashing the dry cardamom.

  6. Transfer the milk mixture into a wide mouthed circular bowl.

  7. Take a pressure cooker and place the jaggery mixed milk bowl in the pressure cooker.

  8. Cook the milk until 3 or 4 whistles and switch off the stove.

  9. Remove the bowl from the pressure cooker and let it cool for some time.

  10. Remove the Junnu from the bowl and transfer it to a plate, then cut it into pieces.

  11. Junnu is ready to be served.

Note : Junnu is a sweet which can be served as a snack.

About :Junnu is one of the oldest recipes of Andhra cuisine. It can also be prepared with buffalo’s colostrum milk. It is rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals especially calcium and phosphorus. It has been proved that Junnu helps in prevention of cancer and adding strength to bones. However, it is high in fat content.
